Question

What should be the sum of lengths of an aluminium and steal rod at 0oC is, so that at all temperatures their difference in length is 0.25m (Take coefficient linear expansion for aluminium and steel at 0oC as 22×106/C and 11×106/C respectively.

Solution

Thermal expansion :
in steel,
ls=α3lsT in aluminium
la=αalaT
As at all temp.
|lals|=0.25 m ----- (i)
la=ls=0
la=ls
αa(la)T=αslsT
22×106×la=11×106×ls
2la=ls ------- (ii)
From (i) and (ii)
lsla=0.25
2lala=0.25
la=0.25 m
ls=2la=0.5 m
Sum of length =ls+la=0.5+0.25=0.75 m
