Solution

  1. The condition in which the heart suddenly stops pumping blood is called cardiac arrest.
  2. The person may lose consciousness and stop breathing.
  3. Cardiac arrest may lead to death.
  4. Some of the causes of cardiac arrest are a block in a coronary artery, lack of oxygen, major blood loss or very low potassium levels in the blood.

What should be done if someone is having a heart attack or cardiac arrest?

Both heart attacks and cardiac arrests are emergencies that can be fatal if help is not given within 10 minutes.

If you see a person having a heart attack or a cardiac arrest, do the following:

  1. Call a doctor or an ambulance at once.
  2. Make the person lie down in a comfortable position with the legs raised above the level of the heart.
  3. Start cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is a combination of chest compressions and breathing into the person’s mouth to help the lungs and heart function better. Learn how to do this correctly.
