A complex neuroendocrine mechanism functions to induce parturition. The fully developed foetus and the placenta induce mild contractions in uterus which are called foetal ejection reflex. It stimulates pituitary gland to release oxytocin. Oxytocin increases uterine contraction which in turn stimulate pituitary to secrete more oxytocin. The process continues and uterine contractions grow stronger ultimately leading to expulsion of foetus out of womb i.e. parturition.
