What stimulates the release of insulin?

Open in App
Solution

Insulin:

  1. Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.
  2. Insulin helps the body to regulate glucose levels.

Stimulation of insulin:

  1. High blood glucose levels promote insulin secretion.
  2. When carbohydrates are digested by the organism, glucose is released into circulation.
  3. This causes the body's blood glucose levels to rise.
  4. As a result, the pancreas sends signals to all of the cells in the body, instructing them to take in glucose.
  5. The majority of this glucose is taken up by the cells to provide energy.
  6. Excess glucose in the circulation is converted to glycogen and absorbed by the liver and muscle cells for later use.
  7. Insulin promotes glucose absorption and its uses in cells. It stimulates glycogenesis, which is the conversion of glucose to glycogen.
