What structure in your ear help to maintain a sense of equilibrium?
Sensory crista of the ampulla
The ear is the sensory organs that help us to hear. The ear not only helps in the hearing but also helps us to maintain the balance and equilibrium of our body. Without the ear, we would not be able to balance our body.
The inner ear contains a complex system called vestibular apparatus, located above the cochlea. The vestibular apparatus is composed of three semi-circular canals. The base of canals is swollen and is called ampulla, which contains a projecting ridge called crista ampullaris which has hair cells. The saccule and utricle contain a projecting ridge called macula. The crista and macula are the specific receptors of the vestibular apparatus responsible for maintenance of the balance of the body and posture.
