Question

What three phases of the cell cycle are considered interphase?

Open in App
Solution

Interphase:

  1. The cell cycle in eukaryotes is divided into two parts they are mitosis and interphase.
  2. A cell undergoes a cell cycle that is a specified sequence of events that occurs in a cell in preparation for cell division.
  3. The prefix inter- means between, so interphase takes place between one mitotic (M) phase and the next mitotic phase.
  4. The interphase is the longest phase in the cell cycle where the cell grows, copies its DNA, and prepares for cell division.
  5. The cell then leaves interphase, undergoes mitosis, and then completes its division.
  6. In mitosis, chromosomes will undergo separation alignment and move into new daughter cells.

The three phases which are considered in the Interphase are:

  1. G1: First gap between the last mitosis and the S phase
  2. S: DNA synthesis phase where genetic material gets copied.
  3. G2: Second gap, between the completion of the S phase and the next mitosis (M).
