The three layers of tissue that are Dura mater, Pia mater, and arachnoid protect and cover the brain and spinal cord.
The function of the meninges is to protect from mechanical trauma, support the blood vessels, and also help in making cavity to cerebrospinal fluid CSF.
Meninges are made up of the following tissue membranes:
Dura mater – It is the outer layer composed of thick fibrous tissue.
Pia mater – It's a very delicate thin inner membrane directly adherent to the brain’s surface.
Arachnoid – It is the middle layer, and consists of two components – a continuous membrane following the inner surface of the dura. The trabeculae bridge via the subarachnoid space, attaching to the pia mater. It is a web-like structure that contains fluid.
Subarachnoid space – It consists of blood vessels and fibrous trabeculae. The CSF runs in this space
These three layers along with cerebrospinal fluid maintain brain tissue from jostling against the skull.
