Question

What triggers ACTH?

Open in App
Solution

ACTH-Adrenocorticotropic hormone:

  1. The anterior pituitary gland produces and secretes adrenocorticotropic hormone, which is a polypeptide tropic hormone.
  2. ACTH regulates the synthesis of another hormone known as cortisol.
  3. The adrenal glands, two tiny glands positioned above the kidneys, produce cortisol.

ACTH is triggered by:

  1. When levels of cortisol are low in blood, the hypothalamus released CRH (Corticotropin-releasing hormone).
  2. ACTH is stimulated by CRH secreted by the hypothalamus.
  3. ACTH then acts on its target organ, the adrenal cortex.
