ACTH-Adrenocorticotropic hormone:
- The anterior pituitary gland produces and secretes adrenocorticotropic hormone, which is a polypeptide tropic hormone.
- ACTH regulates the synthesis of another hormone known as cortisol.
- The adrenal glands, two tiny glands positioned above the kidneys, produce cortisol.
ACTH is triggered by:
- When levels of cortisol are low in blood, the hypothalamus released CRH (Corticotropin-releasing hormone).
- ACTH is stimulated by CRH secreted by the hypothalamus.
- ACTH then acts on its target organ, the adrenal cortex.
