Gastrin:
- A peptide hormone produced by cells of the upper intestine stimulates the secretion of gastric juice.
- Gastrin is secreted into the stomach as a result of food items, peptides, calcium, amino acids, and an increase in pH.
Gastrin secretion is triggered by:
- The secretion of gastrin is also stimulated by the intake of antacid medications which increases the pH of the stomach and reduces the acid levels in the stomach.
- High levels of gastrin hormone are associated with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a syndrome that is caused by the gastrin-secreting tumor in the digestive system.
- Low levels of gastrin in the stomach can increase the risk of infections in the digestive system and also reduces the ability of the stomach to absorb nutrients.
