Question

What triggers the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum?

Open in App
Solution

Sarcoplasmic reticulum:

  1. It is comparable to the smooth endoplasmic reticulum in other cells, is a membrane-bound structure present within muscle cells.
  2. The SR's primary purpose is to keep calcium ions (Ca2+).
  3. It is a complex network of specialised smooth endoplasmic reticulum that is involved in both electrical impulse transmission and calcium ion storage.
  4. The myocytes are surrounded by a membrane-bound system of tubules and cisterns formed by these longitudinal tubules.
  5. Depolarization of the sarcolemma (muscle membrane) caused by nerve stimulation causes calcium ions to be released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
