Following are the factors which cause acceleration:

1. When the velocity of a body is changed.
2. When the direction of the body is changed.
3. When there is variation in either acceleration or velocity.
4. It is defined by formula: $\stackrel{-}{a}=\frac{v-v_0}{t}$ here, $\stackrel{-}{a}$ is the average acceleration, $v$ is final velocity, $v_0$ is starting velocity, $t$ is time.

Acceleration is denoted by $a$ and its SI unit is $metre/secon{d}^2(m/s^2)$.
