Solution

Oxides:

  • “The binary compounds formed by the reaction of other elements with oxygen are called oxides.”
  • They are classified as acidic oxides, basic oxides, amphoteric oxides and neutral oxides.

Reaction of non-metals with oxygen:

  • The reaction of non-metals with oxygen results in the formation of acidic or neutral oxides.
  • For example, the reaction of Carbon (C) with Oxygen (O2) gives Carbon dioxide (CO2) which is an acidic oxide. On the other hand, Hydrogen (H2) reacts with Oxygen (O2) to give water.

C(s)+O2(g)CO2(g)H2(g)+O2(g)2H2O(l)
