Question

What type of transport does not require energy?

Open in App
Solution

Transport across cell membranes:

Transport across the cell membrane implies the translocation of molecules, compounds, and cell metabolites across the cell membrane.

Depending on the expenditure of energy, there are majorly two types of transport across membranes:

  1. Active transport: This occurs by the expenditure of energy and occurs against the concentration gradient of the molecule to be transported. For instance, the transport of sodium into the cell and potassium out of the cell with the assistance of a Na+-K+ ATP pump.
  2. Passive transport: This does not require any energy expenditure as it occurs along the concentration gradient of the molecule being translocated. Examples include simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis.
