Question

What types of bonds are present in ammonia? Write its chemical formula.

Open in App
Solution

Chemical formula

  • A chemical formula is used to represent the constituent atoms present in a molecule and the ratio of atoms in it.

Ammonia

  • The chemical formula of ammonia is NH3.
  • Ammonia has 3 polar covalent bonds in it between nitrogen and hydrogen.
  • In a covalent bond, electrons are shared between the constituent atoms of the molecule.
  • Here the electrons are shared between nitrogen and hydrogen.
  • Nitrogen shares 3 electrons, one with each hydrogen atom, hence having a 3 covalent bond between nitrogen and 3 hydrogen atoms.
  • The nitrogen atom is more electronegative than hydrogen hence the shared pair of electrons slightly shifts towards the electronegative atom nitrogen, hence the bond becomes polar.
