Question

What volume of air (containing 20 % O2 by volume) will be required to burn completely 10cm3 each of methane and acetylene.
CH4+2O2CO2+2H2O2C2H2+5O24CO2+2H2O

Solution

Burning of methane:

CH4+2O2CO2+2H2O

According to the reaction,
For complete burning 1 volume of methane, 2 volumes of Oxygen is required.
Hence, for burning 10c m cubed of methane, 20 c m cubed of oxygen is required.
Since, air contains 20% of oxygen. So 100 c m cubed of air will be required containing 20c m cubed of oxygen.

Burning of acetylene:

2C2H2+5O24CO2+2H2O

According to the reaction,
For complete burning 1 volume of acetylene, 52 volumes of Oxygen is required.
Hence, for burning 10 c m cubed of acetylene, 52×10=25 cm3 of oxygen is required.
Since air contains 20% oxygen.
So, 20c m cubed oxygen is present in 100 c m cubed
Therefore, 25 c m cubed oxygen will be present in 10020×25=125 cm3
Hence, 125 c m cubed of air will be required containing 25 c m cubed of oxygen.
