What was life like during the Great Depression?

The normal American family lived by the Depression-time saying: ‘Go through it, destroy it, make do or manage without.’ Many attempted to keep up appearances and continue with life as near ordinary as could really be expected while they adjusted to new monetary conditions. Families accepted another degree of thriftiness in day-to-day existence.
