Question

What was the attitude of the Annales School towards Historiography?

Open in App
Solution

Instructions:

There should be at least 3 points here. Discuss what the Annales school pointed out about the contemporary historiography first, then show what they wanted to include as well- the commonplace things. Point out their holistic attitude at the end, as that's what the question wants answered.

Solution:

The Annales School recognised the fact that history so far had been only about the major political and diplomatic events, wars, great kings, leaders, conquerors etc. They advocated that besides these, history should also focus on more commonplace items like the local people, agriculture, climate, trade, technology, means of communication, social divisions etc. Thus, we can say that their attitude towards Historiography was much more holistic and well-rounded when compared to the traditional study
