Question

What was the basis of classification of the elements by Mendeleev?

Open in App
Solution

Mendeleev’s Classification:

  1. A Russian chemist Dimitri I Mendeleev stated in 1869 that “the physical and chemical properties of elements are the periodic functions of their atomic weights.”
  2. Mendeleev then arranged all the elements known (63) at that time in order of increasing atomic weight.
  3. The arrangement was done in horizontal rows and vertical columns in such a way that the elements with similar properties belong to the same group.

Hence, the basis of the classification of the elements by Mendeleev was arranging the elements in order of increasing atomic masses.
