In Jallianwala Bagh incident on 13 April, 1919, General Dyer killed thousands of unarmed Indians. This incident came as a shock to the entire nation. As the news of this incident began to spread, crowds came out to the streets in protest in many north Indian towns. There were strikes, clashes with the police and attacks on government buildings. The government reaction was brutal and repressive seeking to humiliate and terrorise people.
