Dear Student,

  1. Before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Europe was tensed and all countries had been arming themselves preparing for war over territories and overseas colonies.
  2. Countries such as Germany felt that they had not been given enough rights over colonies and wanted more power and were challenging old powers like England.
  3. The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo proved to be the immediate cause of the start of the war between the Allies and the Central Powers.
  4. There was intense rivalry between countries in Europe in pursuing colonial interests.
  5. Before the onset of the war, all countries had been arming themselves and politicians had been spreading propaganda about a War to end all wars.
  6. This was followed by extreme nationalism and militaristic tendencies in Germany and Italy.
  7. The Ottoman Empire and Czarist Russia had their own reasons for joining the war in order to expand their territory but the empires were routed along with the Habsburgs of Germany.
