It is generally believed that many of the reasons that led to the First World War had their origin in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-1871. Germany defeated France and annexed the French territory of Alsace-Lorraine. The war and the subsequent annexation caused widespread resentment and a strong desire for revenge in France. Bismarck tried to isolate France by keeping it aloof and by signing a series of defensive alliances. However anti German sentiment remained. France allied with England which eventually divided Europe into two rival camps.
