What was the main drawback of Rutherford's model? [2 MARKS]

Open in App
Solution

Explanation : 2 Marks

According to Rutherford, the electrons were revolving in orbits around the nucleus. But, any particle in a circular motion will have an acceleration. During acceleration, the electron will radiate energy and should eventually lose all its energy. When this happens, it will fall into the nucleus and the atom will become highly unstable. Since, the atoms are actually stable, it means there was some misinterpretation on Rutherford's side.
