The atomic mass was Mendeleev's basis for the classification of elements.

Mendeleev’s Periodic table: He classified the elements on the basis of the atomic masses. His law states that “the properties of an element are the periodic function of their atomic masses.
1. He arranged the elements in periodic (horizontal rows) and groups (vertical column). The elements in the groups have similar properties.
2. There are 8 groups indicated by Roman numerals as I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII. The elements belonging to first seven groups are subdivided into sub-groups as A and B on the basis of similarities in properties.
3. Group VIII consists of nine elements which are arranged in three triads.
There are 6 periods
4. Mendeleev's left some gaps in the periodic table for those elements which were not known at that time
