The places where the Aryans settled permanently, were known as janapadas.
The head of the tribe became the king and all assemblies which formerly assisted the head of the tribe lost all power.
The sole power resided in the hands of the king and the position of the king also became hereditary.
Earlier the farmers voluntarily gave a part of their produce to their king or the head of the tribe, but now the taxes were imposed on the farmers, which were known as Bali or Bhaga.
It was given to the king in return for the protection of their agricultural lands.
