Dear Student,
The Old Regime was the social and political system established in the Kingdom of France from the 15th century to the 18th century under the Valois and Bourbon dynasties. The realm was divided into three estates based on the social hierarchy. The First Estate comprised of the clergy. The Second Estate was the French nobility and royalty. The first two estates constituted approximately 2% of France’s population. The Third Estate comprised all of those who were not members of the above. They constituted of urban(middle class) and rural(peasants) masses. The third estate constituted 98% of France’s population.
