Instructions: Write about the problems faced by India in the initial years. Followed by, the establishment of the Planning Commission. Then include the vision of Nehru in formulating the Planning Commission and the motives behind it.
Solution:
India after gaining Independence from a long colonial rule of the British, suffered from poverty, food scarcity, and so on. Thus while framing the Constitution, the Constituent Assembly had called for social, economic, and political justice and equality of status and opportunities.
Therefore a Planning Commission was set up, which directly reported to Nehru. The commission was set up to formulate policies. Nehru had the vision of bringing change in the economy and even in politics as well.
He wanted
- Dissolve the divisions of caste and religion
- Dissolve religious disruptive or disintegrative tendencies
- Emerge India as a strong and modern nation
Thus, the First Five Year plan was proposed. It focused on agriculture and stressed the need for improved food production, evolving transport, and communications, and inclusion of social services.
