India had paved roads from ancient times as is evident from the ruins of Mohenjodaro and Harappa. The earlier emperors connected their capitals with other parts of their territories. The Mughal rulers were noted for building roads. Sher Shah Suri built the famous Grand Trunk (GT) road to strengthen and consolidate his empire. This road connected Kolkata and Peshawar. However, road transport was quite limited in India before the Second World War.
