The trangular slave trade was the trade in slaves between Africa, Europe and the European colonies in North America. Under this trade, slaves were captured in Africa and sent to the American colonies. The slaves produced cash crops which which were exported to Europe. European goods, in turn, were used to purchase African slaves.

Napoleon reintroduced slavery because the French economy was heavily dependent upon the slave trade. Cities like Bordeaux and Nantes owed their position to the slave trade. Powerful businessmen had their stake in the slave trade, whose support and finance was necessary for Napoleon’s wars
