With the introduction of Potato in the European diet, people began to be fed and dramatic changes were bought about in the lives of the people. The longevity in Europe had increased. The dependency on Potato was such that it had become a staple food item so when the potato crop was destroyed in the 1840's due to disease it led to massive starvation in Ireland.
