The Home Rule Movement was started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Annie Besant in 1916 CE. The movement was launched because of a number of reasons. One of the reasons was that the Indians were not happy participating in World War I as it did not affect them directly. Annie Besant was convinced that it was British subjugation which was the cause of India's miseries. So, she launched a movement inspired by the Irish Home Rule Movement. Moreover, both Tilak and Besant wanted self-rule under the umbrella of the British Empire.
