In the 19th century, a large number of women in London were employed in factories. However, with technological development, many women lost their industrial jobs. By the late 19th and early 20th century, about one-fourth of a million women worked as domestic servants in London. There was a change when the First World War started. Many women got employment n wartime industries and offices. Such women withdrew from domestic service.
The factors that brought these changes were
1. Technological development that enabled factories to replace women workers with machines.
2. The First World War, which opened up employment opportunities for women.
