The main change that took place in trading in India during the 16th and the 17th century was the advent of European traders. Earlier, sea trade in India was mostly controlled by Arabs. However, since the arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498, increasing number of European traders arrived in India. They soon displaced the Arabs as the most important group of foreign traders in India. The European traders also started building factories and settlements in various places along the coast of India.
