Question

What were the characteristic of Europe nationalism during last quarter of the 19 century

Open in App
Solution

During the last quarter of the 19th century, nationalism no longer retained its foundations in liberal and democratic thought. Instead, it became an ideology for the pursuit of national glory. Nationalism began to be seen in narrow ethnic terms. This was particularly so in the Balkans where various ethnicities sought independence from the Ottoman empire. Following independence, the Balkan states sought to expand their territories by fighting with each other.
