Solution

  • Many reformers in Bombay and Vidyasagar in Calcutta set up schools for girls.
  • Many people were afraid of schools when the first schools were opened in the mid-nineteenth century.
  • People feared that schools would prevent girls from fulfilling their domestic duties.
  • People were of the opinion that girls must keep away from public spaces.
  • People feared that as girls had to travel through public spaces to reach schools, it would end up having a corrupting influence on them.
  • People feared that girls would be taken away from their homes because of schools.
  • Hence, throughout the nineteenth century most educated women were taught at home by liberal husbands or fathers.
  • Some of the women were also self taught.
