The First World War had a huge impact around the world. Many people lost their lives, there was a huge destruction to property. The expenditure of the war was extremely high and many people underwent poverty.
The effects of the First World War are as follows:
Destruction of men and material: Around 6.5 crore people took part in the war, and at least 1 crore died, many were injured and several people were left physically disabled. 2 crore were injured and around 70 lakhs were rendered permanently handicapped. Apart from the battlefield, many even died of starvation and epidemics that broke out after the First World War.
Social Change: As the men had to go to the battlefield, women took charge of their family and different professions. Women demanded for equal rights and the right to vote.
Treaty of Versailles (1919) - The treaty of Versailles was signed in the Mirror Palace in France. This treaty marked the end of the First World War. The main provisions of the treaty were to reduce troops and disarmaments, to reorganise the regions and to divide the war gains and war fines. However, this treaty was extremely unfair to Germany. Hence, the second world war unfolded in 1939.
