The Government of India Act 1935 provided for the three major proposals that is the federation, provisional autonomy and safeguards to be vested in the powers of the central and provisional executive. It had the following features:

a. The act provided for the introduction of provisional autonomy.
b. The Act prescribed federal structure for the government of India , with subjects like foreign affairs, defence under the control of Governor general.
d. The act provided for the creation of two new provinces namely Sindh and Orissa.
e. It provided for the governments' in provinces with bicameral legislatures in for instance in Bombay, Bengal, Madras provinces.
f. The first time direct elections were introduced.
