The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 1992, to discuss the global environmental issues confronting the world. Famously known as the Earth Summit, it had the following outcomes:
a. It produced a number of conventions with regard to the climatic changes and protection of biodiversity and forestry.
b. The leaders at the summit also signed the Declaration on Global Climatic Change and Biological Diversity. They endorsed the global Forest Principles and adopted Agenda 21 for achieving sustainable development in the 21st century.
c. These global Forest Principles comprised non-legally binding principles aimed at achieving a global consensus on the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. These principles make certain recommendations for the conservation of forests.
d. The summit also brought forth the questions pertaining to the protection and management of the Global Commons.
e. The leaders pledged to cooperate and work towards environment protection.
