What were the reasons for discarding the idea of fixity of species ?

According to the idea of fixity of species, species do not change over a time and remain as was once created. However, this idea was discarded by many scientists as great variety is seen within each species due to the process of evolution. All the species have evolved over the time due to mutation. Hence, species are dynamic and cannot be specific.
