Question

What will be the correct order for the wavelengths of absorption in the visible region for the following:
[Ni(NO2)6]4,[Ni(NH3)6]2+,[Ni(H2O)6]2+?

Solution

In all the given complexes, the metal ion is Ni2+. The increasing field strengths of the ligands present as per electrochemical series are in the order:
H2O<NH3<NO2
The energies absorbed for excitation will be in the order:
[Ni(H2O)6]2+ <[Ni(NH3)6]2+ <[Ni(NO2)6]4
As E=hcλ,i.e., E α1λ; the wavelengths will be in the opposite order, that is as follows
[Ni(H2O)6]2+ >[Ni(NH3)6]2+ >[Ni(NO2)6]4
