Question

what will be the effect of hypotonic and hypertonic salt solutions on human RBCs

Open in App
Solution

RBC doesn't have a rigid cell wall, but only has a thin cell membrane.

In hypotonic solutions, concentration of surrounding liquid is less than that of concentration inside RBC. So, endosmosis occurs, ie, water moves to the cell from surrounding. Due to absense of ridgid cell wall, cell expands, and eventually bursts due to excess osmosis.

In hypertonic solution, concentration of surrounding water is higher than RBC. So, exosmosis occurs, ie, water moves outside from cell. The cell shrinks, and eventually dies.
