Question

What will be the effect on the working of an electric bell if instead of a direct current, an alternating current is used ?

Solution

  1. The working of an electrical bell depends on the 'make and break' of the circuit. Is working is not affected by the type of current used. That is alternating or direct current.
  2. Direction of direct current remains the same. So polarity of the electromagnet will not change.
  3. Direction of alternating current changes rapidly so the polarity of the electromagnet will change rapidly.
  4. Both the currents activate the electromagnet and hence soft iron is pulled. In the case of alternating current, the polarity of the electromagnet rapidly changes but it has no effect on the attractive power of the electromagnet.

Hence, no effect on the working of an electric bell when an alternating current is used.
