Question

What will be the flow of water if a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution?

Open in App
Solution

Hypotonic solution:

  1. A hypotonic solution is a solution that has less osmotic pressure than the cytoplasm of the cell.
  2. Osmotic pressure refers to the minimum pressure which is required to avoid the flow through osmosis by a semipermeable membrane.
  3. Whenever a cell is placed in any kind of solution, the cell membrane acts as a semi-permeable membrane.
  4. As the osmotic pressure is less in a hypotonic solution, hence more water will flow inside the cell.
  5. As more water is entering the cell it results in the turgidity of the cell.
  6. Hence the cell becomes swollen.
