Question

What will be the fraction of volume of a floating object of volume V and density d above the surface of a liquid of density D?

Open in App
Solution

the volume of liquid that is responsible for buoyant force =volume

of an object immersed inside liquid (Vim)

D*g*Vim =mg = d*g*V

mass = density*volume

D*g*Vim = d*g*V

D*Vim = d*V

Vim/v = d/D

interchanging sides and adding 1 on both sides (to get floating volume)

1-(Vim/V) = 1-(d/D)

(V-Vim)/V = (D-d)/D

(V-Vim , is the floating volume)

the fraction of volume of a floating object = (D-d)/D
