Both △ABC and △ACD are right angled traingles.

Applying pythagoras theorem in △ABC:
AB2+BC2=AC2
122+62=AC2
144+36=AC2
AC2=180 sq. units

Similarly, applying pythagoras theorem in △ACD:
AD2=AC2+DC2
AD2=180+42
AD2=196

AD=14 unit
