Solution
Waves are classified in to longitudinal and transverse wave.
Sound waves are longitudinal waves.
Longitudinal waves are those in which the particles vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation of the waves.
The atoms which are set in these vibrations move back and forth.
This continuous back and forth motion of atoms results in high pressure area called compression and low pressure area called rarefaction.
