What will happen if the egg is not fertilized?

In case an ovum released by either of the two human ovaries is not fertilized, the egg degenerates and comes out with extra blood vessels that had started to line the uterus for preparation of pregnancy.
This discharge of the ovum and the blood vessels or tissues is known as menstruation and lasts for around 5-7 days.
