Question

What will be the nature of electric potential at a place where the electric field is zero?

Open in App
Solution

The nature of electric potential in the absence of an electric field:

  1. Electric potential is defined as the amount of work needed to move a unit charge from a reference point to a specific point against the electric field.
  2. When the electric field once at position is zero, the potential there remains stable.
  3. The negative gradient of potential is used to describe the electric field.
  4. The potential at a point will always be constant if the electric field there is zero.
  5. Given is the relationship between potential and the electric field: E=-dVdx
  6. It is from a reference point to a specific point inside the field.

Hence, if the electric field at a point is zero then the potential at that point will be constant.
