Question

What will happen to cell life if ER were absent (3 marks)

Open in App
Solution

The rough ER has attached ribosomes critical for protein synthesis. Smooth ER produce lipids and steroids etc so basically cells NEED these organelles. Without them many enzymatic processes would be unable to occur ultimately killing the cell.

If there was no ER, then there would be protein synthesis happening because, the ribosomes that are attached to the ER (rough is you want me to be specific) are the manufacturing centeres of protein. Not only that, vesicles which help in the transport of proteins, hormones and other molecules in and out of the cell will dissappear. Without the ER, it will be pretty hard for a cell to function properly.
