Area of the original square =(side)2=a2

(i) if side is doubled, we have

Then, New side =2a

New area of the square =(2a)(2a)

=4a2

=4× area of the original square

(ii) if side is halved, then

New side =a2

New area of the square =(a2)(a2)

=a24

=14× area of the original square
