Question

What will happen when If an iron rod is dipped in CuSO4 Solution?

Solution

Displacement Reaction

A chemical reaction in which a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution is called displacement reaction. The reactivity series arranges the metals in order of their reactivity. Therefore, when a more reactive metal is added to a solution of a less reactive metal, displacement reaction takes place.

Iron rod dipped in CuSO4 solution

Iron is a more reactive metal than copper in the reactivity series. Therefore, when iron (Fe) comes in contact with a copper sulfate (CuSO4) solution, it displaces copper from the salt forming ferrous sulfate (FeSO4). The displaced copper is deposited on the surface of the iron rod forming a brown layer on its surface.

The chemical equation for the displacement reaction is:

Fes+CuSO4aqFeSO4aq+Cus

(Iron) (Copper (Ferrous (Copper)

sulfate) sulfate)
